ANDREW HOEGL
is a Los Angeles-based abstract artist and Emmy-nominated television writer/producer. Influenced by the traditions of Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and Color Field painting, his approach to abstraction is both painterly and direct, allowing each work to evolve through an intuitive process. In his practice, Hoegl maintains a playful and unpretentious stance, emphasizing the deeply personal and subjective nature of artistic expression.
Drawing inspiration from the urban landscape, Hoegl incorporates collage elements and familiar images into his work. Informed by his background in music and storytelling, he approaches his canvases as compositional spaces where elements build like musical arrangements. He begins with a harmonic foundation, layering collage elements and marks, while text and gestural strokes create a melodic interplay on the surface. This process explores the tension between construction and deconstruction, balancing the fine line between chaos and control.
Text plays a central role in Hoegl's practice, appearing as fragments that sometimes pose questions, suggest actions, or remain deliberately unfinished—inviting viewers to complete the narrative. His evocative titles and material descriptions add another conceptual layer, suggesting emotional and intangible elements that spark a personal connection between the viewer and the work. For Hoegl, art is fundamentally about creating space for individual interpretation and connection, free from the constraints of art world pretense.
